How to configure LTI 1.1 for Canvas LMS

Step 1: Publishing an Online Course

1. Navigate to the Designer platform.
2. Select the Project.
3. From the Project TOC (Table of Contents), you can publish a new project or republish an existing project.
4. Click the Publish button.
5. A Publish Settings pop-up will be displayed with the following options:
   • Publishing with slider “OFF”, publishes the course to the Learning Object Repository. 
   • Turning the slider “ON” displays the TOC hierarchy, with an option to mark nodes to be made public (visible & searchable) in the LO Repository. 
6. On configuring the Publish Settings, click the Publish button.

Note: Publishing a course, creates a .fcd (frost course designer) package in LO Repository. An email confirmation is sent to the user’s registered email ID, on completion of the publishing process.

Step 2: Exporting the Project

1. Click the Export button.

Note: The Export Course button appears only when the Course has been successfully published to the LO Repository by clicking the Publish button.

2. From the Export Course Package drop-down, select IMSCC 1.1, and click Export.
3. From the Export Log list, select the Exported package to download and click Save.

Note: A download link will also be sent to the user’s registered email ID, on completion of the export process.

Step 3: Creating an Organization

1. Navigate to the Admin platform.
2. From the Admin dashboard, select the “Orgs.” tab. 

Note: If the required organization is already created, you can directly move to Step 4.

3. Click the Create Organization button.
4. Enter the organization details:
   • Organization Name
   • Organization Type – choose one from the list:
     • Enterprise (Default)
     • Partner
     • Others

Note: Any new organization gets created as a Level 2 by default. Level 1 organization is the parent organization and Level 2 can be the partners or schools that the course gets distributed to.

5. Click the Save button.

Step 4: Associating Resource to the Organization

1. Select an Organization.
2. Under the Associated Resources section, click the Associate Resource button. 
3. Select the resource.
4. Click Add Selected.

Step 5: Adding LTI 1.1 Configuration

1. From the Admin dashboard, select the LTI drop-down and click LTI Config. (1.1).
2. Click the Create LTI Configuration button.
3. On the Add LTI Configuration form fill in the necessary details such as:
   • Organization Level – the level of the organization:
     • Level 1
     • Level 2
   • Organization Name – select an organization
   • Configuration Type - select organization type as LMS
4. Based on the data selected above, the following fields are generated automatically:
   • Organization Type
   • Consumer Key
   • Shared Secret
   • Launch URL
5. Click the Save button.

Step 6: Importing the Course in Canvas

1. Login into Canvas as an admin.
2. From the Dashboard, select Start a New Course.
3. Provide the following information:
   • Course Name
   • Content License
4. Click the Create Course button.
5. Select Import Existing Content.
6. On the Import Content page, provide the following information:
   • Content Type - Select Canvas Course Export Package
   • Source - Click Choose File and select the downloaded Course Package in Step 2
   • Content - Select All content
7. Click the Import button.

Step 7: LTI Setup in Canvas

1. Navigate to the Admin section on the left panel and select your account.
2. Navigate to Settings.
3. Under the Apps tab, select View App Configurations.
4. Click “+ App”.
5. On the Add App modal, provide the following information:
   • Configuration Type - Select Manual Entry
   • Name - Name of the App
   • Consumer Key - Copy CONSUMER KEY from Step 5
   • Shared Secret - Copy SHARED SECRET from Step 5
   • Launch URL - Copy LAUNCH URL from Step 5
   • Domain - Copy Domain of LAUNCH URL from Step 5

Note: The domain can be selected and copied from the launch URL. For example, if the LAUNCH URL is “https://frostplatform.com/admin/api/v2/ltilaunch” then the Domain will be “frostplatform.com”.

6. Click the Submit button.
7. A notification appears confirming the app was added.

Note: On successful configuration, users can access the content of the Imported Course on Canvas LMS.
