How to Author Open-Ended Question
- On the Project Dashboard, click on the Menu bar and select All Assessments.
- From the Assessment Management screen, click the View button next to any assessment to navigate to the Assessment Question screen.
- Click Create New Question on the top right corner of the screen.
- Next, choose the question type. Select Open Ended from the dropdown menu.
- Click Confirm to open the Create Open Ended Question page.
- On the Create Open Ended Question page, enter the required details:
- Question Title – to help you identify the question. The title is not displayed while previewing or rendering the assessment.
- Question Stem – the main question body that is displayed above the options
- Instruction Text – to help end-users perform an action
- Media – can be used to add a media file to the question details.
- Without media – (default)

With media – when selected, displays the Add media from Assets button which allows choosing media from the local project repository or LOR.
- Click on the Add media from Assets button
- Select a file
- You can search or apply filters to find the required image file.
- On selecting the file, click Add Selected

Details – to add required information and create variants such as:
- Without Response – You can add the answer to the question. The student can click on Check Answer to reveal the answer.
- With Response – You can add the sample answer and feedback. Both of these are shown when the student enters a short answer in a text area and clicks the Check Answer button.
- Click Save to create the Open-Ended question.
- On successful creation, a notification will be displayed on the screen.
Note: In Canvas LMS, the Open-Ended Question question types will be displayed in the Quiz section as Essay Question.
